If you want to improve your writing skills, the first question you need to ask yourself is: WHAT do I need to write in my life?
Here are some things that you might want to learn how to write:
- business letters
- workplace notices and/or memos
- college essays
- letters to your child’s school teacher
- resume and cover letter
- greeting cards
From the list above choose THREE which you think are the most important for you in your life.
Before, people used to write more business letters. Nowadays, most people write emails and shorter messages that are similar to emails (for example on LinkedIn). Very few jobs require you to know how to write a business letter.
If you are going to college or university, you need to learn how to write an essay. There are many books that you can get, for example from the library, that will teach you how to write an essay in English.
If you need a resume and a cover letter, it’s a good idea to seek help from numerous organizations that have special people (Job Developers or Counsellors) who can help you – for free! – to create a professionally looking resume. Do not do it alone.
The golden rule to writing anything is to first READ A LOT OF EXAMPLES. You can find many samples (examples) online to help you write well. Be careful NOT to translate from your fist language – emails and other documents have different format and use different language in English. Remember: how we write is heavily influenced by the culture of the country. Try, if possible, to find Canadian / North American samples.
